Neoliberalism In Practice

Karl Naylor has a fantastic piece about the impact of neoliberalism on Portugal and other countries. It is a very, very good article, please give it a read.

  1. Good read. I'm glad he mentioned Facebook since that was what entered my head near the end.

So Portugal is a casualty too... no surprise, with the neoliberal disease rampant in Europe.

    Thanks for sharing.

  2. Hi CA Constantian,

You are very welcome. Thank you for the comment. I like how the neoliberals avoid talking about policy and instead seem to stress vague national characteristics when trying to explain why these different countries deserve brutal austerity. As expected, the Portuguese are depicted as lazy mama's boys, which is typical of stereotypes of Latin peoples.

Now it looks like Belgium may be in trouble, so I guess we can expect all kinds of talk about how Belgians just sit in cafes all day long, don't work, and... I don't know, maybe something disparaging about waffles?

Seriously though, these are all techniques to avoid criticizing the neoliberal system as such and it is ridiculous that the neoliberal hack journalists get away with passing ethnic stereotypes off as solid political/economic analysis.
